United Church of Canada Chinook Presbytery

Chinook Presbytery was one of the 7 presbyteries of Saskatchewan Conference created in 2000. It was initially comprised of pastoral charges formerly part of Cypress Hills Presbytery and Moose Jaw Presbytery. In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, Chinook Presbytery was combined with Saskatchewan Conference and the other remaining presbyteries to become Region 4.

It was initially comprised of pastoral charges formerly part of Parkland Presbytery (previously Yorkton Presbytery). In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, Good Spirit Presbytery was combined with Saskatchewan Conference and the other remaining presbyteries to become Region 4.

United Church of Canada River Bend Presbytery

River Bend Presbytery was one of the 7 presbyteries of Saskatchewan Conference created in 2000. It was initially comprised of pastoral charges from the former Saskatoon Presbytery. In January 2019, as part of a larger restructuring of the United Church of Canada, River Bend Presbytery was combined with Saskatchewan Conference and the other remaining presbyteries to become Region 4.

United Church of Canada Moose Jaw Presbytery

Moose Jaw Presbytery was one of the original 16 presbyteries established by the first General Council of the United Church of Canada (June 1925), to be part of the new Saskatchewan Conference. Initial boundaries were based on the previous Moose Jaw Presbytery, which had been part of the Presbyterian Synod of Saskatchewan. Prior to Union, in 1925, there had also been a Moose Jaw District, in Saskatchewan Conference of the Methodist Church.

In 2000, Saskatchewan Conference went from 10 presbyteries to 7, with each adopting a new name. Most pastoral charges from Moose Jaw Presbytery became part of the new Chinook Presbytery.

Harris family

Oliver Harris (1837-1922) and Ann Francis (1844-1929?) were both born in Devonshire, England. Each sailed to Canada as children, with their families. They married in 1865, in Ontario. In 1882, they took their 6 children – including Lucy (1867-1930) and William F. "Fred" (1868-1950) – and moved to a homestead in the Brandon Hills area of Manitoba. Mr. Harris and his son Fred homesteaded again in 1890, near what became North Portal and Mrs. Harris and other family members joined them in 1893, including Eva (b.1884) and Ella (b.1887?), both born after the family settled in Manitoba. In 1905, Oliver and Ann Harris retired from the farm to the village of North Portal.

Hine, Ethan Riley

Ethan Riley Hine was a Methodist (probationer), stationed at North Portal when he died, in 1907. Born in Staffordshire, England, he came to Western Canada in 1906 and was stationed at the North Portal Methodist Circuit, in Saskatchewan. He died in 1907, while travelling between appointments.
