Name of creator

(1925–ca.1965, 1982?–2000)

Administrative history

Balgonie Pastoral Charge was formed as a new United Church charge in 1925, part of Regina Presbytery, with appointments at Balgonie, Newton and Pilot Butte. By 1936, the charge consisted of Balgonie and Newton and, between 1940 and 1946, Pasqua Reserve was also added. As of 1962, Balgonie and Pilot Butte were the only listed preaching points and around 1965, Pilot Butte formed its own separate charge, served from Regina St. James, while Balgonie was served from Brora, which it joined soon after.

Balgonie and Pilot Butte together formed New Beginnings Pastoral Charge, around 1982. On January 1, 1994, the charge divided again into Balgonie and Pilot Butte Pastoral Charges. Balgonie Pastoral Charge amalgamated with McLean Bethel Pastoral Charge, June 30, 2000, to form Balgonie-McLean Pastoral Charge.

Name of creator

(2000–)

Administrative history

Balgonie-McLean Pastoral Charge was created June 30, 2000, from the amalgamation of McLean Bethel Pastoral Charge and Balgonie Pastoral Charge (previously part of New Beginnings Pastoral Charge, to 1994).

Name of creator

(1925–ca.1960?, 1989–2000)

Administrative history

McLean Bethel Pastoral Charge was initially created as a United Church mission field in 1925, part of Regina Presbytery. By 1926, it was listed as an aid-receiving pastoral charge, with additional points at Bethel and Davin. As of 1940, the charge only consisted of McLean, Bethel and Fairview, with Avonhurst added in 1951 or earlier. By 1962, McLean and Avonhurst were listed alongside Qu'Appelle and Edgeley, as part of Qu'Appelle Pastoral Charge.

On April 1, 1989, Edgeley and McLean formed separate pastoral charges (again). On June 30, 2000, McLean Bethel amalgamated with Balgonie Pastoral Charge to form Balgonie-McLean Pastoral Charge.

Custodial history

Original provenance for many of the records in the fonds is unclear. Initial items were transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. Additions were received by Saskatchewan Conference in the 1990s and 2000s.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of textual materials generated by several associated churches and their varying governing pastoral charges: Balgonie Pastoral Charge, Pilot Butte Pastoral Charge, McLean Pastoral Charge, Balgonie-McLean Pastoral Charge, and New Beginnings Pastoral Charge, as well as predecessors and constituent churches – their boards, committees and related bodies, and local women’s units.

Contents include: minutes of church boards, trustees, session, and congregational meetings; minutes and other records from local Ladies Aid Societies, Woman’s Association (W.A.), and United Church Women (U.C.W.) groups; Sunday School records; historic rolls and related membership records; some financial records and annual reports; church record books and registers documenting baptisms, marriages and burials in Pilot Butte, Balgonie, McLean, Fairview, and nearby area(s).

Arrangement

Original order for many of these records is unclear. Items under A.381.XV.A were arranged and listed as local church records sometime before 1990, with further batches (under XV.SA and XV.SC) added between 1992 and 2005. The fonds was created in 2023, based on historical relationships between the charges, records previously listed and any new accruals.
