Administrative history

Battleford Pastoral Charge was formed as a self-sustaining United Church charge in 1925, part of Battleford Presbytery and consisting of the Battleford appointment. By 1932, the charge contained preaching points at Battleford, Eagle Hills, and Prongua -- the latter two, along with Waines, had initially been part of Eagle Hills Mission Field in 1925. Between 1946 and 1951, Prince (formerly part of Meota Mission Field then Pastoral Charge) was also added to the charge. As of 1962, preaching points were Battleford, Denholm (formerly part of Ruddell Pastoral Charge), Eagle Hills and Prongua, then by 1967, Battleford and Denholm. In 1987, Denholm amalgamated with Battleford.

Name of creator

(1925–195?)

Administrative history

Ruddell Pastoral Charge was formed as a self-sustaining United Church charge in 1925, part of Battleford Presbytery and consisting of the preaching points at Denholm and Ruddell. By 1936, the Lilac appointment was added and, by 1940, the charge had been renamed Ruddell-Denholm Pastoral Charge. As of 1951, Wavie Bank was also listed as a preaching point. Sometime between 1951 and 1958, the charge was closed, with Ruddell joining Maymont Pastoral Charge and Denholm joining Battleford Pastoral Charge (as of 1962).

Custodial history

Original provenance for many of the records in the fonds is unclear. Initial items were transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. Further batches of records were added around 1998, 2003, 2004, and 2009.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of textual materials generated by Battleford Pastoral Charge and its predecessors, including Eagle Hills Mission Field and Denholm (from Ruddell Pastoral Charge), as well as their constituent congregations – church boards, committees and related bodies, local women’s units and other groups.

Contents include: minutes of official boards, Stewards, congregational, and Sunday School meetings; records of local Ladies Aid Societies, Woman’s Association (W.A.) and United Church Women (UC.W.) groups; various financial records; some reports and correspondence; a Circuit Register from Battleford, Prongua and Waines; a Mission Station records book from Eagle Hills; and registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials held at Battleford, Denholm, Prince, Eagle Hills, North Battleford, Riddell, Radisson, Keatley, Hafford, Richard, Speers, and related locations.

Arrangement

Original order for many of these records is unclear. Items under XV.A and XV.B were arranged and listed as local church records sometime before 1990 and the accruals (under XV.SA, XV.SC) were added between 1990 and 2022. The fonds was created in 2022, to include records previously listed and any later additions.
