Darrel Heald was born August 27, 1919 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He received his education at Liberty and Govan, and at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. He married Doris Rose Hessey of Regina in 1951. They had two children, Lynn Doris and Brian Darrel. He was a member of the Regina Curling Club, Saskatchewan Roughrider Football Club, Masonic Lodge, Wa-Wa Shrine and the Assiniboia Club in Regina.
First elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in the general election of 1964, he was re-elected in 1967 as Liberal MLA for Lumsden, serving in this capacity until May 25, 1971. On May 22, 1964 he was appointed Attorney-General and Provincial Secretary, both of which he held until June 30, 1971. On September 1, 1970 he was appointed Minister of Co-operation and Co-operative Development, a portfolio he held until June 30, 1971.
