General note

The naming of Indian Head has been the subject of many articles over the years. Most of them refer to the periodic smallpox epidemics that devastated the local indigenous (mostly Nakoda) peoples. The article in this item refers to the smallpox wave of 1837-1840. Other articles give different versions or perspectives on the naming of Indian Head (eg. IHM.2020.0404). The town's name has had detractors from the very first, as in a letter from Edwin J. Brooks.
