Emma Lake Art Camp - Gus Kenderdine

Bio/Historical Note: Artist workshops have been held at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan, since 1935. Augustus F. (Gus) Kenderdine, an artist trained at the Academie Julian in Paris and an instructor in the fledgling Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan, established a summer art camp on an eleven-acre boreal forest peninsula on the shores of Emma Lake. He convinced Walter C. Murray, first president of the University of Saskatchewan, that the art camp could perform a vital role in the offerings of the department, and in 1936 the Murray Point Art School at Emma Lake was officially incorporated as a summer school program. The school was also known as the art colony. Participants were teachers and artists who came from all over the province to learn how to teach art in Saskatchewan schools. After Kenderdine's death in 1947, a new generation of Saskatchewan artists came of age or moved into the province, including Kenneth Lochhead, Arthur McKay, Ronald Bloore, Ted Godwin, and Douglas Morton, popularly referred to as the Regina Five. In 1955 Lochhead, director of the Regina College School of Art, proposed a two-week workshop at Emma Lake to follow the Murray Point Art School classes. The workshop concept, based on modernist art, was established to keep Prairie artists in touch with art centers such as New York and Toronto. The internationally renowned Emma Lake Artists' Workshops became an established annual event and continued virtually unchanged until the last workshop was held in 1995. Since the mid-1960s the site has also been a provincial research area under the auspices of the U of S Department of Biology for biologists and other researchers. It is the most northerly field station in Saskatchewan and one of the few sites in Canada that specifically examines the boreal forest. It was declared as a game preserve in 1962. In 1989 the site was officially designated as Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus in recognition of Gus Kenderdine. The campus closed in 2012. In 2020 the university relocated nearly two dozen cabins at the site to Montreal Lake Cree Nation to provide additional housing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bio/Historical Note: Augustus (Gus) Frederick Lafosse Kenderdine was born 31 March 1870 in Chorlton-upon-Medlock, England. He studied art under his grandfather, Belgian artist Chevalier de la Fosse, at the Manchester School of Art, and was then apprenticed to several established artists in Blackpool. Kenderdine went on to study at the Academie Julien, in Paris, France, in 1891. Upon returning to England he opened Gus Kenderdine Photographer and Fine Art Dealer, but chose to emigrate to western Canada, inspired by the stories of the Barr Colonists and their utopian settlement of Brittania. The family homesteaded near Lashburn (1908-1920) and he fell in love with the beauty of northern Saskatchewan. At the request of Walter C. Murray, University of Saskatchewan president, Kenderdine opened a studio in Saskatoon in 1920 and began teaching art classes. Murray offered Kenderdine artist-in-residency status on campus, and in 1927 appointed Kenderdine lecturer in Art, teaching noncredit classes. In the early 1930s Kenderdine purchased land at Murray Point on Emma Lake, a site which became the University of Saskatchewan Summer Art School, of which he was director from 1936-1947. Fondly remembered by his students, "Father" Kenderdine, as he was referred to in the yearbooks, made a significant contribution to the interest and appreciation of art in Saskatchewan. In 1936 he also became director of the School of Fine Arts at Regina College. Kenderdine did several portrait commissions and later exhibited his work across Canada, although he is best known in Saskatchewan. He did several landscape studies in charcoal in a style similar to Gainsborough. Kenderdine’s sweeping romantic depictions of the Saskatchewan landscape are marked by his training in England and France. His imagery recast Saskatchewan's topography in the comforting image of Europe. Kenderdine died 3 August 1947 while teaching at Emma Lake, and is buried at Lashburn Cemetery. The Art School at Emma Lake was renamed the Kenderdine Campus in his honour. In 1991 the U of S named the Kenderdine Art Gallery in his honour, thanks to a bequest by his daughter, May Beamish (1898-1998). His works can be seen in the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Kenderdine Road in Arbor Creek in Saskatoon honours him.

Frederick W.G. Haultain - Memorial Marker

Bio/Historical Note: Sir Frederick William Alpin Gordon Haultain (1857-1942) was born in Woolwich, England and came to Peterborough, Canada West, with his family in 1860. He grew up in Peterborough and Montreal, where he was educated at the High School of Montreal, later receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. He went on to study law at Osgoode Hall and was called to the bar in Ontario in 1882 and in the North-West Territories in 1884. Haultain was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in a by-election held on 5 September 1887. He defeated Charles Conybeare by a large margin. Haultain would win his next five elections by acclamation. Haultain was appointed the first Premier of the territories on 7 October 1897. As premier, Haultain led negotiations for the granting of provincial status. Haultain argued for these territories to be admitted as a single province named Buffalo, and wanted the new province to be governed by non-partisan governments. The federal Liberal government of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, however, decided to create two provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, in 1905. Frustrated in negotiations with the federal Liberal government, Haultain became increasingly identified with the Conservative Party and campaigned for it in the 1904 federal election. Laurier's Liberals were re-elected. Haultain led the Provincial Rights Party in the 1905 Saskatchewan provincial election, which was won by the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan. Haultain became the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan for Lumsden. From 1905 to 1912, Haultain sat in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as leader of the Opposition. In 1912, the newly elected Conservative federal government of Sir Robert Borden made Haultain Chief Justice of Saskatchewan's superior court. He was knighted in 1916, and in 1917 was made Chief Justice of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, a position he held until his retirement in 1938. Haultain became the University’s second chancellor from 1917 to 1939. In 1937 he was awarded an Honourary Degree from the U of S. Haultain died in Montreal in 1942 and his cincerary urn with a bronze plaque lie behind the U of S Memorial Gates that were dedicated during his term of office.

Bio/historical note: Frederick William Gordon Haultain was the Chief Justice of Saskatchewan succeeding E.L. Wetmore as Chancellor in 1917 and remained in the position until 1940. Haultain had a profound influence on the formation of the constitution for the University of Saskatchewan, partly due to his influence in the province while Leader of the Opposition. Haultain received an Doctor of Civil Law (honoris causa) from the U of S in 1931. Haultain's cincerary urn with a bronze plaque lies behind the Memorial Gates that were dedicated during his term of office.

Bio/Historical Note: In 1959 a campus group calling themselves "University Radio Productions" approached the federal government for a broadcast license to operate a student-run FM station on a non-commercial basis. Licensing requirements demanded that licenses only be issued to the university itself; in 1960 students approached the Board of Governors for approval. Operation of the station, including a constitution, was formalized in 1965 between the University and the Students Union (USSU), and CJUS-FM was launched. Studios were initially located in the basement of the university's Memorial Union Building, but were moved to the basement of the Education Building in 1980 next to the Department of Audio Visual Services. The station was launched through a partnership between the university's board of governors and its student union. For a number of years, the station also aired some programming from the CBC Stereo network before CBKS was launched. In 1983, with the station in financial trouble, it began to accept limited commercial advertising, and briefly changed its call sign to CHSK. The following year, the university's board decided to discontinue its funding of the station, and CHSK ceased broadcasting on 30 September 1985. CJUS was relaunched as an Internet radio stream in 2005.

Sports - Mascots

Bio/Historical Note: Green and white were established as the official colors of U of S sports teams in 1909-1910, but the Huskies name did not appear at that time. Teams were generally referred to as “varsity” or “the green and white” when they played or appeared in media. The name “Huskies” began appearing in the 1930s, first in a September 1932 article in the StarPhoenix. Media caught onto the name and continued to use it; the name appeared in the 1932-1933 edition of The Greystone - the U of S yearbook at the time - along with a photo of the men’s hockey team in uniform with “Huskies” across the front. The origin of the Huskie name is unclear, but women’s teams were generally referred to as the “Huskiettes,” while men were the Huskies. On 15 Feb. 1946, The Sheaf printed a photo of an unidentified man holding a husky canine on campus, thought to be the first mascot. The husky appeared at various sports functions to lead the players onto the field and watch from the sidelines — on a leash. The late 1970s and early 1980s were the first time that the mascot appeared as a human dressed in costume. The women’s hockey team co-coach and trainer in the 1970s, Murray Gordon, began wearing a dog outfit and appearing at hockey games as “Hymie the Huskie.” Gordon also dressed up for football games and other campus events. The Huskie was generally accepted as the official mascot by this point, and appeared in 1980 on the men’s hockey team sweaters as a side profile of a dog’s head and neck. By the 1990s however, an outward-facing head of a dog appeared on all teams’ uniforms. The first official mascot costumes were created in the 1980s as well. A woman named Elva Finlay created a Huskies mascot costume in 1985 and restored a 1980 version of the costume that same year. The two new mascot costumes were worn by two university students, Lori Winter and Chris Mirwald, who attended U of S events and Huskie games. Today, the Huskies mascot is known as “Howler” and there are multiple people employed to dress in the Howler costume as the U of S mascot.

Bio/Historical Note: Though the first recorded withdrawal from the University Library occurred in October 1909, nearly five decades passed before the Library had its own building. The early collection was housed either on the second floor of the College Building (later known as the Administration Building) or was scattered among a number of small departmental libraries. Plans for a new library building in the late 1920s were ended by the start of the Great Depression; but a dramatically reduced acquisitions budget was offset by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation in 1933. In 1943 the University hired its first professional Librarian. A combination of provincial grants and University fundraising financed the construction of the Murray Memorial Library. The library was named after the University’s first President, Walter C. Murray. Designed by noted Regina architect Kioshi Izumi working under H.K. Black, Architect, it marked a change in campus architecture away from the more angular and elaborate Collegiate Gothic style to that of the less expensive cube. Building materials included granite at the entrance and Tyndall stone as a wall cladding and window trim. In addition to the library, the building housed the College of Law, an office of the Provincial Archives and a 105-seat lecture theatre equipped with the latest in audiovisual teaching aids. The most dramatic transformation took place between 1970 and 1976 when a six floor south wing was added along with an extensive renovation of the 1956 structure. Designed by BLM, Regina, the south wing was unlike any other building on campus. Clad in Tyndall stone panels made to look like concrete (through a "bush hammered" finish), the grey almost windowless building is industrial and utilitarian in appearance. The University's master plan required buildings in the core of campus to be clad in stone. However, the "bush hammered" finish was used since the Library addition was built during a period that saw the flowering of "Brutalist" Architecture, so called because of the wide use of exposed concrete. The new (south) wing, originally called the Main Library, was officially opened on 17 May 1974, and also became the home of the Department of Art and Art History, the College of Graduate Studies and the University Archives.
