Saskatoon StarPhoenix fonds

Fonds consists of ca. 400,000 photographs taken by StarPhoenix photographers and 3.5 m of newspaper clippings (most are photocopies) of some of the corresponding published images.

The StarPhoenix destroyed negatives and clippings dating from 1965 to 1969.

Images document local news, events, and personalities predominantly in Saskatoon, but also from other parts of central and northern Saskatchewan. Subjects include sports, recreation, arts, entertainment, education, research, social and political events, business, native affairs, agriculture, accidents and scenic views and significant people.

StarPhoenix Collection - General Photographs series

Series consists of photographs and newspaper clippings (showing corresponding images) taken by by StarPhoenix photographers and showing scenes of sports, recreation, the arts, entertainment, education, research, social and political events, business, Indigenous and First Nationas affairs, agriculture, accidents, prominent people, scenic views, slice-of-life views, and others.

Hard working Saskatonians

File contains photographs of numerous Saskatoon citizens hard at work, shot for a Star Phoenix Labour Day special feature. Included are Ed Bachamer, window washer; Paolo Fenu, plasterer; Gary Leson and Hank Hanson, ice deliverers; Peter Sorba and Sandor Than, meat packers; Leo Renner, commissionaire; Verna Hallahna, waitress; James Erker, carpenter; and Lorne Grand, service station manager. Photographs also taken by Rick Olmstead. Items 1 to 18 are SP-A's (35mm) and items 19 to 23 are SP-B's.

Sod turning ceremony for a new saw mill at Big River, Sask

File contains photographs of the sod-turning ceremony at Big River SK. J. Ross Barrie, Minister of Natural Resources turns sod to start construction on a new saw mill to be completed in May 1971. Also included are images of stacks of wood that was cut by two portable mills in the area, as well as images of the town of Big River. Items 1 to 13 are SP-A's (35 mm) and items 14 to 21 are SP-B's.

Canada Winter Games Flag Raising

File contains photographs of the raising of the Canada Winter Games flag and the official ceremony that goes with it. Attending the ceremony was comedy team of Wayne and Shuster. The proceedings took place in front of the Centennial Auditorium in downtown Saskatoon. Items 1 to 10 are SP-B's (2x2" format) and items 11 to 12 are SP-A's (35 mm).

"Dynasty" Inspired Fashion

File contains 10 x 13 cm colour transparencies and 35 mm slide images of a woman wearing clothing in a style similar to the clothing worn on the popular television series "Dynasty". Transparencies are labeled SP-E and slides are SP-F.

Star Phoenix staff photos

Series consists of photographs of individual men and women who are on the staff of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper. Photographs were taken in the Star Phoenix offices.

Climbing Mount Blackstrap

File contains photographs of the "topping off" ceremonies at Mount Blackstrap. Included are images of Chuck Brown and Les Burns setting off to climb Mount Blackstrap, there is also an image of them planting a Canada Games Flag on top of the "mountain". Items 1 to 10 are SP-A's (35 mm) and item 11 is SP-B.

Missing Helicopter Pilot, Jim Hamilton, Home at Last

File contains photographs of helicopter pilot Jim Hamilton, and his helicopter, who finally returned to Prince Albert after being missing in the Northwest Territories for 36 days. Hamilton ran into bad weather upon leaving from Baker Lake NWT, and had to land. Realising that search planes would have little chance of finding him, he walked 21 miles to Ennadai Lake NWT, a remote weather station. Also pictured are members of Mr. Hamilton's family, his wife Trudy, mother Mrs. Nancy Hamilton, sons Ronald and David and daughter, Mrs. John Logan. Items 1 to 8 are SP-A's and items 9 and 10 are SP-B's.

Western Speed skating Championships

Photographs include action and posed shots from the Western Speed skating Championships. The published photograph shows speed skating family, Ken Melnyk, Kevin Melnyk, Kathy and Karen Melnyk. Items 1 to 7 are SP-Bs (2x2" format) and items 8 to 13 are SP-As (35mm).
