Administrative history

Sutherland Pastoral Charge was formed 1925, as part of Saskatoon Presbytery and containing preaching points at St. Paul's United Church, in Sutherland, and Floral. Prior to union, St. Paul's had been a Presbyterian Church (built ca.1910), whose congregations had joined with local Methodists in the 1920s, after their church closed. After a fire, in 1943, the congregation worshipped for 3 years at Sutherland School (across the street), until the church was rebuilt. By 1951, the charge included Second Street United (Saskatoon) and Cory. Second Street returned to a separate charge ca.1955. In 1956, Sutherland became part of Saskatoon and around the same time the charge was renamed Saskatoon St. Paul's Pastoral Charge.

Custodial history

Original provenance for many of the records in the fonds is unclear. Initial items (under A.381.XV) were transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. Additions (under A.923.XV.SA) were received by Saskatchewan Conference archives in 2003.

From 1925 through to 1982, the official repository for the United Church in Saskatchewan was at St. Andrew’s College (Saskatoon), where they were managed by a designated Conference Archivist. In 1982, the Conference signed an agreement to house their records with the Saskatchewan Archives Board (later Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan), while still retaining ownership and management responsibilities. The collections were gradually relocated and continue to be stored with the Provincial Archives, to the present day.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of textual materials generated by Sutherland St. Paul's Pastoral Charge, its successor Saskatoon St. Paul’s Pastoral Charge and their constituent churches – boards, committees and related bodies, and other local groups.

Contents include: minutes of church Board, congregation and stewards’ meetings; records from meetings of local Young Peoples’ Union (Y.P.U.) groups; and registers of baptisms, marriages and burials that took place at Sutherland (later Saskatoon) St. Paul’s Church, Floral, Dundurn, Pleasant Point, Cory, Moose Woods Reserve, and related locations.

Arrangement

Original order for many of these records is unclear. Items under A.381.XV were arranged and listed as local church records sometime before 1990 and those under A.923.XV.SA were added around 2003. The fonds was created in 2021, to include select records previously listed and any new accruals.
