Histoire administrative

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix was created in 1928 by the merger of the Saskatoon Daily Star (established in 1906 as the Capital) and the Saskatoon Phoenix (estalished in 1902 as the Phenix). Both were originally weeklies.

The newspapers were purchased by Clifford Sifton on January 1, 1928, and the combined newspaper began publication on September 12. In 1996, the paper was sold to Hollinger Newspapers, and then to CanWest Global Communications, becoming part of the Southam Newspapers division, in 2000, and later to Postmedia.

Historique de la conservation

Records were transferred from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper to the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan beginning in 1965. Records were transferred from the PAS to City of Saskatoon in 2019 when the PAS Saskatoon office closed.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of ca. 400,000 photographs taken by StarPhoenix photographers and 3.5 m of newspaper clippings (most are photocopies) of some of the corresponding published images.

The StarPhoenix destroyed negatives and clippings dating from 1965 to 1969.

Images document local news, events, and personalities predominantly in Saskatoon, but also from other parts of central and northern Saskatchewan. Subjects include sports, recreation, arts, entertainment, education, research, social and political events, business, native affairs, agriculture, accidents and scenic views and significant people.
