Hosaluk, Michael

Michael Hosaluk is recognized internationally and in Canada as one of the world’s most creative woodturners. Born in 1954, in Invermay, Saskatchewan, Hosaluk is self-taught.
His work covers a wide range of objects and materials including functional vessels, furniture and sculptural pieces. His work is humorous and elegant, possesses character and gesture and is full of reference to architecture, nature and culture. Hosaluk’s work has been exhibited throughout Canada, in Europe, China, Japan, Australia and the United States.
Hosaluk’s pieces can be found in the permanent collections of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace; Zhao Xiu, Governor of Jilin Province, China; Idemitsu Corporation, Tokyo; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Detroit Institute of Arts; Yale University Art Gallery; Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Royal Ontario Museum.
He has lectured and demonstrated extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Norway and Israel. In 2003, he participated in the French Association of Turned Wood’s conference Artistic Woodturning Worldwide in Puy St. Martin, France. Hosaluk has also been the coordinator of the biennial International Wood
Furniture/Turning Conference since 1982.
Hosaluk is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and earlier this year became an Honourary Lifetime Member of the Saskatchewan Crafts Council. He is active on the Steering Committee of the Furniture Society of North America, and is on its Advisory Board. Hosaluk’s work has recently been profiled in numerous publications including Fine
Woodworking; American Craft; and Woodwork magazines. He was awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts in 2010. Hosaluk is also the subject of a book published in 2002 by Guild Publishing, titled Scratching the Surface: Michael Hosaluk.

Park, Jeffery James

Jeffrey Park earned his BA (1974) and his PhD (2002) from the University of Saskatchewan. Between 1977 and 1986, he taught variously at Poundmaker Cree Nation and at high schools in Saskatoon. He became an instructor at Brooklyn College, New York, from 1986-1991; while there, he earned his MFA (1989). Returning to Saskatoon, he worked as a sessional lecturer in the department of English, from 1991 until joining the College of Education as a professor of Secondary English Methods, in 2002.

Cooper, Lorne

Lorne Cooper was born in North Battleford on August 25, 1936. He attended Notre Dame Elementary School. In 1955 he graduated with his high school standing from the Convent of the Child Jesus (COCJ). Shortly after graduation, the North Battleford News-Optimist hired him as their Sports Editor; he held that position from 1956 to 1961. Later he served as News Editor for the News-Optimist from 1961 to 1963. For the next 17 years, until 1980, he served as News Director for CJNB Radio. He rejoined the News-Optimist as Editor in April of 1980. Lorne has actively served the Battleford's community for many years. He was inducted into the North Battleford Sports Museum and Hall of Fame in October 1998. He was a recipient of the Rotary District 5360 and North Battleford Rotary Club "Integrity Award". He was the Chairman of the Host Committee for the Canadian Senior Baseball Championships in 1974. He also served on the city committee for the City's Golden Jubilee in 1963, the Canada's Centennial in 1967, and the Saskatchewan Homecoming in 1971. Lorne was married to Emily (nee Fedun), formerly of Richard, Saskatchewan. He and Emily have two daughters: Sandra (Wade) Sidor of Calgary, and Wendy (Rick) Rawlyk of Chestermere, Alberta. They have four sons: Lorne Jr. of Baljennie, Dale of North Battleford, Richard of North Battleford, and Kelly of Prince Albert. They have seven grandchildren. Lorne passed away on July 3rd, 2003. He was only 67 years old.

Fred Brown's parents were Luther "Buster" Brown and Lilas Brown (nee Rigg). Fred attended Pierceville S.D. #1671 from 1941 to 1951, Willowdale S.D. #1887 from 1951 to 1953, and lastly, Burke School from 1953 onward.

Christie Anne Bjorgan (nee Flett) was born February 3, 1934 to John and Margery Flett. She later married, and had two children: Margery and Bradley.
