Abernethy Presbytery was one of the original 16 presbyteries established by the first General Council of the United Church of Canada (June 1925), to be part of the new Saskatchewan Conference. Initial boundaries were based on the previous Abernethy Presbytery, which had been part of the Presbyterian Synod of Saskatchewan.

In 1953, the pastoral charges in Abernethy Presbytery were divided and moved to other presbyteries: Nokomis Pastoral Charge was added to Saskatoon Presbytery; other charges located west of Highway 35 were reassigned to Regina Presbytery; and the charges east of Highway 35 were moved to Yorkton Presbytery, which was re-named Abernethy-Yorkton Presbytery.

Third Avenue United was originally built in 1910, as a Union Church, with a congregation of Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Baptists. With the formation of the United Church of Canada, in 1925, it became part of Biggar Pastoral Charge.

Henry Unger was a Canadian Pacific Railway man who helped with the Fred Finch farm near Lanigan, Saskatchewan.

Joseph Edwin ("Ed") Underwood was born in Wroxeter, Ontario. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1909 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He married Lina Florence Case, of Toronto, in 1911, and moved to Saskatoon. After her death in 1931, he married a second time, to Ethel (d. 1983). He had three children, J. Bruce, Edith and Elizabeth. In Saskatoon, he was involved with organizations like the Saskatoon Board of Trade, the Exhibition Board, the Westminster United Church and the Masons.

Deight Underwood attended Regina College from 1927-28 to 1929-30. During his senior year he served on the Student Executive and played basketball. Underwood grew up in Shackleton, Saskatchewan, where he lived until his death in the 1990's.
