Scope and content

The Canadian Pacific Railway yards as they appeared in 1910. Great development had taken place in the preceding twenty years, since the first train left Yorkton in 1891. In the picture above, left center, it will be noted that in 1910 the fair grounds were on the present site of Jubilee park, the live stock building and large tents are seen. On the right is Livingstone Street.

General note

Ironically as it may seem railway traffic was heavier in 1910 than it is today. Now (in 1962) Yorkton has no railway passenger service and a very limited freight service, this change is due largely to highway motor transportation. In addition, and as a sign of progress, the steam locomotive has disappeared from the scene and has been replaced by diesel power, however, the diesel locomotive will never take the place of the steam locomotive in the minds of those people who lived on the prairies in the early days, when the whistle of the steam locomotive brought welcome sounds of civilization.
