Orest Buchko - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Orest Buchko was born 17 June 1929 in Prince Albert and raised in Meath Park, Saskatchewan. He received his BSc in Pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1955. He served his pharmacy apprenticeship at University Hospital in Saskatoon and became a staff pharmacist in 1956. He became assistant director of Pharmaceutical Services one year later. Buchko was appointed director of Pharmaceutical Services in 1963 and provided outstanding leadership in that capacity until his retirement in 1991. It was under his direction that the first hospital-wide decentralized unit dose system was established and many other unique innovations were implemented during that period. Buchko also was instrumental in establishing and leading the hospital pharmacy residency program as well as serving as clinical assistant professor of Pharmacy at the College for over twenty years. His entire pharmacy career was served at University Hospital / Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and it was during those 36 years that many of the major modern approaches to hospital pharmacy practice and education were established in the Department of Pharmaceutical Services. The Orest Buchko Hospital Pharmacy Award was established in 1991 in his honour. This award is given to an outstanding graduating student of the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition who is pursuing a career in hospital pharmacy. Orest Buchko died 9 April 2019 [in Saskatoon] at age 89.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Wesley Claude MacAulay was born in 1909 in East Dudswell, Quebec, and moved with his family to Limerick, Saskatchewan in 1918. He graduated with a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan in 1936 and continued with postgraduate studies at Purdue University. Dr. MacAulay was on the faculty of the University of Toronto from 1937-1939, when he accepted a position with the College of Pharmacy of the U of S. Between 1942 and 1945 he served with the Canadian Army overseas. Dr. MacAulay was appointed dean of Pharmacy in 1946 until his death in 1975. He was active in many professional and educational organizations, serving as president of: the Association of the Deans of Pharmacy; the Association of the Faculties of Pharmacy; and the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Sylvia Wallace was a recipient of the University's Master Teacher Award in spring 1988. The Sylvia Wallace Memorial Scholarship recognizes academic performance in pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics and has been made available by donations from family and friends of Dr. Wallace, who was a professor of Pharmacy (Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics) in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, and associate vice-president (academic) at the U of S.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Susan Whiting received her PhD in nutrition from the University of Guelph and had postdoctoral training at the University of British Columbia. After teaching at Mount Saint Vincent University for 6 years, Whiting moved to the University of Saskatchewan where she has worked for 30+ years. She is one of the original investigators of the Saskatchewan Pediatric Bone Mineral Accrual Study, which has followed hundreds of Saskatchewan elementary school children for over 25 years. In 2012 Dr. Whiting was awarded the Canadian Nutrition Society’s McHenry Award for Distinguished Service in Nutrition in Canada. Dr. Whiting is Distinguished Professor Emeritus (2024).
