School of Physiotherapy - Awards

Bio/Historical Note: A diploma program in Physiotherapy was established in 1965 in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, two and a half years in duration. In 1973 the diploma program increased in duration to three years. A Bachelor of Physical Therapy (BPT) degree is introduced, a one-year program for diploma graduates. The School of Physical Therapy was established in 1976, under the general supervision of the College of Medicine. In 1981 a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy was introduced, a four-year program that replaced the diploma and BPT. Enrollment is increased from 20 students to 30 students in 1987. A new five-year curriculum was introduced for the Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1997. In August 2007 the first students entered the Master of Physical Therapy program. The name of the school changed from the School of Physical Therapy to the School of Rehabilitation Science. In 2023 the School of Rehabilitation Science received funding for 15 additional seats per year in the Master of Physical Therapy program, including 2 additional equity seats.

College of Pharmacy - Awards

Bio/Historical Note: Following passage of the Saskatchewan Pharmacy Act in 1911, the newly incorporated Saskatchewan Pharmaceutical Association requested the University of Saskatchewan undertake the training and examination of pharmacists. A School within the College of Arts and Science was established in 1913 and the following year, 22 students enrolled in a one-year certificate program following a three-year apprenticeship. In 1921 the School became a College offering a four-year course leading to a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Three years later the certificate program was extended to two years. In 1946 the four-year BSP was a requirement for license in Saskatchewan. In 1987 a Division of Nutrition and Dietetics was established in the College of Pharmacy. Prior to this, Nutrition and Dietetics had been offered in the College of Home Economics. In 1994 the College was renamed the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. J.L. (Jack) Summers was born 9 October 1919 in Saskatoon. In 1938 he joined the militia and enlisted in the Prince Albert and Battleford Volunteers. He transferred, in 1942, to the South Alberta Regiment of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division fighting in North West Europe, where he was awarded the Military Cross. Summers continued his military service after the war with the militia. At the time of his retirement from the militia in 1974, he had reached the rank of Brigadier General and Commander of the Prairie Militia. He also served as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Saskatchewan Dragoons, Honorary Colonel of the North Saskatchewan Regiment, a member of the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners, and as a member of the Board of Corps Commissionaires. Summers wrote extensively on military history, coauthored the book Military Uniforms in Canada 1665-1970, and authored Tangled Web - Canadian Infantry Accoutrements 1855-1985. After returning from the war in 1946, Summers enrolled in the College of Pharmacy, University of Saskatchewan, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1949. In 1952 he completed a Master of Science degree from the State University of Iowa. Summers was a member of the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan from 1949 until 1987. He was the first director of Pharmaceutical services at the University Hospital. He was president of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (1956-1957), president of the Council of the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association (1964), and president of the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada. Summers, at the time of his death remained the only pharmacist to have presided over all three associations. He also edited the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy from 1961-1981. Jack Summers died 26 January 1994.

College of Pharmacy - Awards

Dr. Wes MacAuley, dean of Pharmacy, holds the entries while Frank Potter, director of Professional Relations with Ortho Pharmaceutical, looks on. Pharmacists across Canada were asked a question and each correct answer was eligible for participation in the contest. The awards are being given by Ortho Pharmaceutical to encourage public dissemination of birth control information through pharmacists. Mr. Woods, a previous winner in the contest, received $500, which goes to his alma mater, the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Jim Blackburn - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Jim Blackburn received his B.S.P. (1960); M.Sc. (Iowa, 1965) and Pharm.D. (Minnesota, 1973). Following apprenticeship at Saskatoon University Hospital, he joined the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital, where he was director of Pharmacy (1963-1968). Dr. Blackburn came on faculty in 1968 and was appointed dean of Pharmacy in 1982, then dean of Pharmacy and Nutrition in 1994. When the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan was implemented, he was appointed to the DQAC and the Formulary Committees. In 1999 Dr. Blackburn retired from the U of S and became executive director, Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada. In 2003 he was appointed executive director of CCAPP. He was president of Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (1972-1973), Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (1996–1997) and Association of Faculties of Deans of Pharmacy of Canada (1984–1985). Dr. Blackburn served on several Expert Advisory Committees with Health and Welfare Canada. He was a visiting scientist in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989-1990 and with the United States Pharmacopeia in Rockville, Maryland in 1997-1998. He led the Canadian Pharmacy Delegation to China in 1993 and was a member of the Canadian Society for International Health Pharmacy Project to Ukraine in 1997. Dr. Blackburn was inducted into the U of S Alumni Hall of Fame in 2019, and is Professor Emeritus of Pharmacy and Nutrition.
