R.G. Woods (centre), pharmacist from Moose Jaw, draws the winning entry for an award from Ortho Pharmaceutical (Canada) Ltd. Wesley C. MacAuley, dean of Pharmacy, holds the entries while Frank Potter, director of Professional Relations with Ortho Pharmaceutical, looks on. Pharmacists across Canada were asked a question and each correct answer was eligible for participation in the contest. The awards are being given by Ortho Pharmaceutical to encourage public dissemination of birth control information through pharmacists. Mr. Woods, a previous winner in the contest, received $500, which goes to his alma mater, the University of Saskatchewan.

Bio/Historical Note: Following passage of the Saskatchewan Pharmacy Act in 1911, the newly incorporated Saskatchewan Pharmaceutical Association requested the University of Saskatchewan undertake the training and examination of pharmacists. A School within the College of Arts and Science was established in 1913 and the following year, 22 students enrolled in a one-year certificate program following a three-year apprenticeship. In 1921 the School became a College offering a four-year course leading to a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Three years later the certificate program was extended to two years. In 1946 the four-year BSP was a requirement for license in Saskatchewan. In 1987 a Division of Nutrition and Dietetics was established in the College of Pharmacy. Prior to this, Nutrition and Dietetics had been offered in the College of Home Economics. In 1994 the College was renamed the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Robert Bruce Gordon was born 14 November 1962 and spent his early years on a farm near Marsden, Saskatchewan, and later moving with his family to Saskatoon. He played for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League and was captain of the Saskatoon Blades in 1981-1982. He was the voice of University of Saskatchewan men’s Huskies’ hockey for nearly four decades. Dr. Gordon’s 28 years in the Saskatoon Police Service included assignments such as detective sergeant in both the Sex Crimes Unit and the Major Crime/Homicide Unit. After retiring from the SPS in 2012 Gordon briefly worked as director of Investigations for the new civilian oversight agency in Vancouver before enrolling in the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduation in 2016 Gordon launched his legal career with Cuelenaere LLP, and was called to the Saskatchewan Bar in June 2017. Dr. Gordon died 29 May 2020 in Regina at age 58.
