Heritage Moose Jaw fonds

This fonds reflects the activity of Heritage Moose Jaw. It includes one scrapbook of heritage buildings in Moose Jaw and material about the Moose Jaw Cemetery. The organization received a grant to help restore some of the tombstones in the cemetery and they collected information about the individuals buried there.

The content has not been professionally appraised, arranged, or described. The following is a basic listing of the unprocessed contents:

-The volume is a ledger that has been also used as a scrapbook; scrapbook contains: table of contents, clippings of movie stars, politicians, poems, "cowboy" images, newspaper clippings, some Swift Current clippings, latest date on a newspaper clipping is 1932 though most are not dated (clippings and pictures are often pasted onto pages that were originally used as a ledger, ca. 1926); after clippings end several of the remaining pages are used as a ledger, 1911 - 1915, records of interactions with businesses, local businesses, and individuals; there is a large number of blank pages, after which there is another ledger, 1909 - 1913, record of interactions with businesses, local businesses, and individuals. The records in the ledger likely pertain to the Alexandra Hotel. "This book belongs to Hofffman James Powley, Beaver Flats P.O., Saskatchewan, Canada / 15th Day of February in the year 1926 A.D./ age - 18 yrs." written inside front cover

The fonds consists of textual and graphic materials generated by Moose Jaw St. Andrew’s Pastoral Charge and United (formerly Presbyterian) Church, as well as their church boards, committees and related bodies, local units of women’s, men’s and other groups.

Contents include: minutes of official boards and Trustees, Stewards, Session, Council, congregational, committees, Choir and Sunday School meetings; communion and historic rolls; a cradle roll; newsletters, annual reports; records of local Ladies Aid Societies, Women’s Missionary Society (W.M.S.), Woman’s Association (W.A.) and United Church Women (U.C.W.) groups, men’s groups (Men’s Club and A.O.T.S.) and youth groups, as well as other social clubs; property and building files; various financial records and correspondence; clippings, scrapbooks and files relating to church groups, history and events, such as the ordination of Lydia Gruchy; and registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials held.

Photographs in the collection include prints, postcards, and negatives, showing the church building, its site and features (e.g. stained-glass window), associated individuals and events (e.g. anniversaries).

Fonds consists of personal and professional papers created by Margaret Messer. Arranged in six series (Education, General, Teaching, Organizations, Publications, and Scrapbooks) the records document her activities as a teacher, art educator, writer, and illustrator, as well as her own education and training and her involvement with several professional groups. A large part of the collection contains information on art education programs at Balfour Technical School (1945-1974) and at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus (ca. 1966-1984) where she was a significant influence on program development. Of particular note is the series of publications which includes articles and books written or illustrated by Messer (1946-1973). Publications of the Saskatchewan Society for Education through Art (SSEA) are found in the Organizations series, along with papers, correspondence, conference materials, minutes, newsletters, and other records pertaining to her involvement with the SSEA (1961-1985), the Canadian Society for Education through Art (1962-1984), the Saskatchewan Arts Board (1947-1970), and others. General Files (1927-1986), containing biographical information, art commissions, personal and professional correspondence, curriculum materials, travel logs, drawings by Messer, and memorabilia, provide additional insight into her life and career.
