Dr. Giovanni De Domenico - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Giovanni De Domenico was born on 14 January 1949 in England and qualified there as a physiotherapist in 1970. Following a period of general experience in a variety of clinical settings, he undertook the Teacher of Physiotherapy program at the Coventry School of Physiotherapy and the North London Polytechnic, graduating in 1975. He was then appointed to the staff of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, School of Physiotherapy, Birmingham, U.K. While in the U.K., Dr. De Domenico gained an MSc from the University of Aston, also in Birmingham, followed by an appointment to the staff of the Wolverhampton School of Physiotherapy, in Wolverhampton. Dr. De Domenico emigrated to Australia in 1978 to take up an appointment in the School of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Health Sciences, Sydney University (Australia). In 1984 he was appointed senior lecturer in the School of Physiotherapy at Curtin University, in Perth, Australia. While there, Dr. De Domenico was responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in the broad areas of electrophysical agents and soft tissue manipulation (massage). Dr. De Domenico was awarded a DPhil in 1988 for his thesis entitled "Kinaesthetic Acuity and Motor Control in Humans". This work was undertaken in the School of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of New South Wales (Australia). In 1989 Dr. De Domenico emigrated to Canada to take up an appointment as associate professor in the School of Physiotherapy, at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was again responsible for teaching all aspects of electrophysical agents and soft tissue massage. Dr. De Domenico moved to Saskatoon in 1992 as professor and director of the School of Physical Therapy, and assistant dean in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1994 he moved to Mobile, Alabama as professor and chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of South Alabama. His final appointment took him to Texas in 2000 as professor and chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In August 2008 he stepped down as chair of the department in order to concentrate on teaching and research in electrophysical agents and soft tissue massage as well as engage in his personal fight against cancer, which ended on 10 April 2010 in Melbourne, Australia.

Nik Semenoff

Bio/Historical Note: Nik Semenoff is a well-known researcher, artist, teacher and inventor. He is likely best known for his cutting-edge, original research into safer printmaking processes that have placed the University of Saskatchewan in the forefront of non-toxic printmaking research and education. Semenoff invented several processes for making prints, in particular the “waterless lithographic process,” high resolution screen printing and specialized inks that made major contributions to his discipline. The techniques and materials he developed have made printmaking safer and less expensive. Semenoff began working at the U of S Extension Division as an artist and media specialist in 1967, moving to the Department of Art and Art History in 1987. Semenoff retired from the U of S in 1992.

Dr. Koravangattu Sankaran - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Koravangattu Sankaran served as a neonatologist and pediatric intensivist in Neonatology, Department of Pediatric Medicine. He is director of Neonatology and Neonatal Perinatal Research. Dr. Sankaran directed and coordinated the Neonatal Perinatal residency training program. He has over 150 peer reviewed publications and over 200 abstract published in proceedings and presented in meetings. Dr. Sankaran is a founding member of the Canadian Neonatal Network where his research interests include multi-centered randomized clinical trials, knowledge transfer, evidence-based practice in neonatology and quality improvement, sudden infant death syndrome, and neonatal sepsis. Dr. Sankaran is Professor Emeritus in Neonatology (2021).

Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Ashfaq Shuaib received his undergraduate medical education at Khyber Medical College in Pakistan, obtaining his MBBS degree in 1980. He did post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the University of Calgary between 1983-1988, followed by specialized training in cerebrovascular research at the University of Western Ontario and Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. He returned to Canada as an assistant professor in Medicine and Neurology at the University of Saskatchewan in 1989 and rose rapidly through the academic ranks to be appointed full professor in July 1995. Shuaib held the position of Residency Program Director in the Division of Neurology between 1990 and 1995, supervised numerous research fellows and graduate students and was director of the Saskatchewan Stroke Research Centre and director of the WHO Centre. Dr. Shuaib joined the University of Alberta as professor of medicine and director of the Division of Neurology in 1997. He is director of the University of Alberta Stroke Program which, in 2016, launched the first stroke ambulance in Alberta. He chairs the National Stroke Program and the National Residents' Review Course and is on the board of the Canadian Stroke Consortium (2023).

Bio/Historical Note: The "Partners in Growth" Campaign raised over $12 million toward the cost of the Agriculture Building. Donors included faculty, alumni, students, individuals and corporations. The campaign, begun in 1986, was organized by Ketchum Canada Inc. and directed by Scott Smardon.
