Name of creator
Abbey Pastoral Charge was formed as a new United Church charge in 1925, part of Swift Current Presbytery and containing preaching points at Abbey, Shackleton and Badger Mound. Later additions included preaching points at Lancer and Roe (before 1951), Portreeve and Lemsford.
In 1957, the charge combined with Leader Pastoral Charge (including Leader, Sceptre and Prelate) to form Leader-Sceptre-Abbey Pastoral Charge. Sometime near 1970, Abbey United Church separated, forming Abbey-Trinity Pastoral Charge. Around 1972, Lancer and Portreeve joined with Abbey to become Abbey-Lancer-Portreeve Pastoral Charge.
Name of creator
Abbey-Lancer-Portreeve Pastoral Charge was formed around 1972, from the combination of Abbey-Trinity Pastoral Charge with the preaching points at Lancer and Portreeve (previously part of Leader-Sceptre Pastoral Charge).
Name of creator
Lancer Pastoral Charge was formed as a new United Church charge in 1925, containing preaching points at Portreeve and Roe. Around 1931 it became part of Abbey Pastoral Charge.
Original provenance for many of the records in the fonds is unclear. Initial items (under A.381.XV) were transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. An additional accrual was received by Saskatchewan Conference archives in 2013.
From 1925 through to 1982, the official repository for the United Church in Saskatchewan was at St. Andrew’s College (Saskatoon), where they were managed by a designated Conference Archivist. In 1982, the Conference signed an agreement to house their records with the Saskatchewan Archives Board (later Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan), while still retaining ownership and management responsibilities. The collections were gradually relocated and continue to be stored with the Provincial Archives, to the present day.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of textual materials generated by Abbey Pastoral Charge, Lancer Pastoral Charge, Abbey-Lancer-Portreeve Pastoral Charge, their predecessors and constituent churches – church boards, committees and related bodies, local women’s units and other groups.
Contents include: minutes of church boards, Session, congregational and Worship Committee meetings; records of local Ladies Aid Society and Women’s Missionary Society (W.M.S.) groups; financial records; Home Mission Record Books with lists of missionaries, church officials and records of communion, baptisms and burials from Abbey, Lancer and Roe; and registers of baptisms, marriages and burials held at Abbey, Lancer, Portreeve, Cabri, Pennant, Sceptre, and related locations.
Immediate source of acquisition
Original order for many of these records is unclear. Items under A.381.XV were arranged and listed as local church records sometime before 1990 and the accruals (under XV.SR) were listed and added in 2013. The fonds was created in 2021, to include select records previously listed and any new accruals.
