Bio/Historical Note: Douglas A. Schmeiser was born 22 May 1934 in Bruno, Saskatchewan, and attended school there. He obtained his BA and then an LLB with great distinction at the University of Saskatchewan in 1956. Schmeiser received his LLM (Mich.) and was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1958. Schmeiser later completed his PhD at the University of Michigan in 1963. He became a tenured professor in 1961, and dean of Law from 1974-1977. Upon retirement in 1995, Schmeiser became Professor Emeritus in 1995. Schmeiser authored a number of legal textbooks; served as chair of the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan; president of the Saskatchewan Bar Association, Constitutional advisor to many provincial and international governments, and played a prominent role in creation of the Canadian Constitution. He advised and lectured on legal, constitutional and judicial matters in the Maldives, Russia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Ukraine and Latvia. For many years Schmeiser served as legal assessor to the Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons and advisor to the Saskatchewan Veterinary Association. He also received the Saskatchewan Award of Merit in 2010. Schmeiser died 28 April 2018 in Saskatoon. Schmeiser Avenue, Bend, and Lane in the Brighton neighborhood of Saskatoon honour him.
