Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Hewitt Merlyn Tysdal was born 14 December 1902. He earned a BA from the University of Saskatchewan (1924), an MA from Kansas State University (1926), and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. He was a specialist in plant genetics, physiology and pathology. Following study in Europe as a fellow of the American Scandinavian Foundation, Dr. Tysdal worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Division of Rubber Plants) and the University of Nebraska. He was instrumental in developing the first bacterial wilt-resistant variety of alfalfa, Ranger, which is now widely grown. Dr. Tysdal was a fellow of the American Society of Agronomy and the American Society for the Advancement of Science, and was a recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from the American Society of Sugar Beet Technologists. Dr. Tysdal died on 19 May 2000 in Arizona at age 97.
