William G. Sullivan - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: William Godfrey Sullivan was born in 1879 in County Cork, Ireland. He graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, with two gold medals for academic excellence. After teaching in Ireland for five years, Sullivan joined the University of Saskatchewan as professor and head of the Department of Classics from 1911 to 1946. Sullivan also served more than once as chairman of the faculty and as acting dean of Arts and Science. He retired in 1946. Sullivan died in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1951.

Christopher D. Pritchet - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Christopher Dixon Pritchet (C.D. - known as "Seedy") was born in 1915 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and was educated at the Royal College in Colombo from 1925-1933. He attended University College, Colombo where he gained a BA (2nd Class) in Latin, Greek and Philosophy with a final year (1938-1939) at University College, London. Pritchet served in the Royal Air Force as a radio operator from July 1940 until May 1945 when he was demobilised. He received his Teacher's Diploma from the Institute of Education in July 1946. After teaching at Westminster City School and Hackney Downs School, Pritchet came to Harrow County School in 1950 to teach classics. In 1957 he emigrated with his family to Canada. For many years Pritchet was professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Saskatchewan. He retired to Victoria in 1983 and died there in 2004.

Collegiate School, Fredericton, New Brunswick - Group Photo

Likely a group photo of the students of Collegiate School. Walter C. Murray, future University of Saskatchewan president, enrolled in the school in January 1882; at the time, it was "the elite school in New Brunswick," preparing students "in preparation for success in university and leadership in society....through a rigorous training in classics with an accompanying program in character-building." Honourary Degrees - Presentation - Desmond J. Conacher

Desmond J. Conacher, honourary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree recipient, is presented at Convocation ceremony held at Centennial Auditorium. Peggy McKercher, University Chancellor, seated at centre of image.

Bio/historical note: Desmond Conacher (1918-2000) (BA., M.A. [Queen’s], Ph.D. [Chicago]) held his first regular appointment at the University of Saskatchewan, where he taught in the Department of Classics from 1947 until 1958.
