Conditions leading to the development of kame terrace: (a) the wasting ice tongue of a glacier which formerly occupied the valley furnishes outwash to the zone between the valley wall and the ice margin, (b) after the melting of the ice the belt of gravel is left as a terrace on the valley floor and locally rests on till. (Dapples 1959, p. 428).

Cross section of typical bog or muskeg showing plant zones between the shore and the open water. Zone 1 is characterised by swamp trees; zone 2 by by tall shrubs; zone 3 by sedge; and zone 4 by floating hydrophytes. The false bottom of floating peaty vegetation is extended lakeward and interwoven with sphagnum moss. (Dapples, 1959, p. 279).
