Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Bruce Robert Schnell was born in 1937 in Maymont, Saskatchewan. A 1960 University of Saskatchewan pharmacy graduate, he later earned a MBA degree at the University of Toronto and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy of the U of S in 1966, became dean in 1976, and vice-president (academic) in 1982. Dr. Schnell was responsible for the establishment of the Master Teacher Award program and was intimately involved in the academic reorganization resulting in the creation of the current College of Pharmacy and Nutrition. Named professor emeritus in 1994, Dr. Schnell subsequently served as the first executive director of The Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs and developed the first accreditation standards for academic pharmacy in Canada. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Dr. Schnell directed two national research projects that significantly influenced hospital pharmacy standards and practice in Canada and abroad -- the Study of the Unit-Dose System of Drug Distribution in Canada and the Development of a Canadian Hospital Pharmacy Workload Measurement System. Dr. Schnell was a member of the Medical Research Council of Canada, associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy and, for 28 years, chaired the editorial advisory panel of the Canadian Compendium of Pharmaceuticals and Specialties (CPS), the primary source of pharmaceutical product information for health professionals in Canada. He was chair of the Formulary Committee of the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan for 17 years. In 2014 Dr. Schnell authored Pharmacy: An Art, a Science, a Profession - Reflections on 100 Years of Pharmacy Education in Saskatchewan. He was awarded an honourary Doctor of Laws degree by the U of S in 2015.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Joseph F. Angel grew up and was educated in Jordan. He received a BSc (1963, hons) in Biochemistry from Ain Shams University, Cairo, and an MSc in Food Technology & Nutrition (1965) from the American University of Beirut. He emigrated to Canada in 1966, and earned his PhD (1971) in Nutrition from the University of Toronto. Dr. Angel served as assistant professor of Human Nutrition at the School of Home Economics, University of British Columbia from 1969-1975. Dr. Angel accepted a position as associate professor of Biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan, and subsequently as professor of Biochemistry in the early 1980s. Dr. Angel served as head of the Department of Biochemistry (1987-1998) and remained at the U of S until his retirement in 2009. He sserved on numerous senior academic committees, including a 2-year term as chair of the University Council. Dr. Angel also developed one of the earliest nutrition courses for medical students which he taught from 1977 until 2009.

Peter N. Nikiforuk - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Peter N. Nikiforuk born in St. Paul, Alberta on 11 February 1930. He received a scholarship to Queen's University and in 1952 graduated with a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics. In 1952 he received an Athlone Fellowship to Manchester University and completed his PhD in 1955. He was awarded a D.Sc. from Manchester University in 1970. Peter's career began as a systems engineer in the development of the missile head for the Avro Arrow. In 1960, he joined the Engineering faculty at the University of Saskatchewan and served as Dean of Engineering from 1973 until 1996. Nikiforuk died in Saskatoon on 19 July 2018.

This fonds documents Allan Gonor’s active engagement with the people he met and the cultures he experienced. His was a curiosity borne of genuine interest, which manifested itself not only in his work as a physician, but also in his avocation: art; and in the numerous films and photographs he took. These document the local communities in and near North Battleford, Saskatchewan; including Hutterite colonies and First Nations reserves; as well as countries around the world. It documents his life and career, his interest in indigenous art and culture, and reflects his friendships with a wide variety of artists and writers, as well as the numerous individuals he met.
