Cunningham vs. Pidgeon [1924]

Statement of Claim in John D. Cunningham et al. versus George C. Pidgeon et al., in the Supreme Court of Canada, and "Spiritual Independence of the Church: Sir Robert Falconer - on Questions Raised by Paragraph 26 of Statement of Claim", which was concerned with the competency of a majority of individual members of the Presbyterian Church to authorize union with another church or to alienate property of the Church.

The fonds consists of textual materials created by and relating to the General Council of Local Union Churches, its Policy Committee and related individuals and bodies.

Contents include: minutes of the Policy Committee (ca.1920), a report to the General Council of Local Union Churches of Western Canada (1921), and resolutions passed by the General Council (1922); publications relating to the General Council (1921-1924); correspondence regarding Union Churches and Cooperative Churches (1924); and an address, The Evolution of Organic Church Union in Canada, given by the Chairman at a General Council Meeting, on April 5, 1915.

There is also a group of additional materials on the topic of Local Unions, created/collected by the Rev. W.H. Hughes. This contains some originals and some copies of archival materials, along with other documents assembled by Hughes.

Property files, 1925-1983

Series consists of files regarding the title to various church properties, including churches and manses, in Saskatchewan Conference (region), as well as general correspondence relating to property. Contents include correspondence, reports, financial records, and loan and grants documents.

Within the series, there are four sub-groupings: Titles; General; Manses; and Charges. "Property - TItles" files (no. 517 through 529) are mostly listed by type and contain correspondence pertaining to titles of church properties. "Property - General" files (530 through 549) are sorted alphabetically by topic and contain general correspondence pertaining to church properties. "Property - Manses" files (550 through 554) are sorted by sub-topics, e.g. furnishings, and contain correspondence and reports pertaining the furnishing, financing and modernization of manses. "Property - Charge" files (555 through 872) are organized by Pastoral Charge, from Aberdeen through Young-Zelma, and contain: general correspondence pertaining to properties held by particular charges in Sask. Conference; applications for loans and grants; building plans; financial statements; and annual reports. Photographs are also noted in this group.
