Awards - Commerce

W.J. Brennan, dean of Commerce, presents the Goodspeed Award to Maureen Yvette Gutek of Humboldt during Convocation held at Centennial Auditorium.

Bio/Historical Note: Georgia Marie (Dodie) Goodspeed was born in Battlefords, Saskatchewan. She was awarded a Governor General’s Medal while in high school, and entered the University of Saskatchewan to study accounting in 1935, earned her Bachelor of Accounting degree in 1939. Goodspeed returned to the Battlefords for three years to article with V.J. Ferguson and Company. She became an instructor in Accounting at the U of S in 1942, an assistant professor in 1950 and professor in 1956. Goodspeed earned an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1949. She was assistant dean of Commerce for many years, and was acting dean twice – in 1962, and from 1964-1965. A champion of the college, Goodspeed was instrumental in upgrading the Bachelor of Commerce program to a four-year degree, and fought hard for the establishment of the Commerce Building. She was also the first woman in Canada to be named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (1960). She retired in 1984 and was named Assistant Dean Emerita. Dodie Goodspeed died in [October] 1986 in Saskatoon. The Goodspeed Award is given to the top graduate of the Edwards School of Business. A state-of-the-art lecture theatre in the college was named in her honour in 2000.

Engineering Research - Denise Stilling

Using the expert system she developed, Denise Stilling, Mechanical Engineering graduate student, compares an actual with a desired diving performance.

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Denise Stilling earned three degrees from the University of Saskatchewan – a BE, MSC and PhD. Dr. Stilling’s research interests include: Value-added product and manufacturing research and development from agricultural fiber and reclaimed material; Engineering management including principles of lean manufacturing, JIT, agile manufacturing, operational management, etc.; Human Factors Engineering including ergonomics, safety design, procedures, etc.; and applied mechanical engineering analysis and design including biomechanics, vibration control, structural analysis, strength of materials, instrumentation, chaos theory and nonlinear dynamics, manufacturing processes, Dr. Stilling’s research experience in artificial intelligence includes applications in knowledge based expert systems, artificial neural networks, wavelets, etc. Dr. Stilling is currently an Associate Professor, Industrial Systems Engineering, University of Regina (2021).

Dr. Koravangattu Sankaran – Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Koravangattu Sankaran served as a neonatologist and pediatric intensivist in Neonatology, Department of Pediatric Medicine. He is director of Neonatology and Neonatal Perinatal Research. Dr. Sankaran directed and coordinated the Neonatal Perinatal residency training program. He has over 150 peer reviewed publications and over 200 abstract published in proceedings and presented in meetings. Dr. Sankaran is a founding member of the Canadian Neonatal Network where his research interests include multi-centered randomized clinical trials, knowledge transfer, evidence-based practice in neonatology and quality improvement, sudden infant death syndrome, and neonatal sepsis. Dr. Sankaran is Professor Emeritus in Neonatology (2021).

Dr. Eiler S. Humbert - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Eiler Shirley Humbert was born in 1927 and raised on a farm south of Regina, Saskatchewan. During the Depression his family was forced off the farm, then relocating to be with family in San Diego, California. The family later returned to Saskatchewan to the family farm. After completing elementary school near his farm, and high school at Central Collegiate in Regina, he enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan. He completed his undergraduate and Master's degree in Dairy Science in the College of Agriculture and was awarded the Tommy Fraser Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship. Dr. Humbert earned his PhD at Michigan State University. In 1954 the U of S offered him a faculty position in the Dairy and Food Science Department in the College of Agriculture. He served as president of the Saskatchewan Agricultural Graduates Association and was awarded an honourary life membership. He and his wife Jean were members of the "Sod Busters", a donor group that enabled the initial planning of the new College of Agriculture building. Upon retirement he became Professor Emeritus. Dr. Humbert died in December 2020 in Saskatoon at age 93.

Dr. Ian Sutherland - Portrait

Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Ian Douglas Sutherland was born 21 June 21 1939 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Following his father he went to work for Canada Trust, which took him to London, Ontario then Regina. Ian then became a health care administrator for nearly thirty years and in 1982 his career brought the family to Saskatoon, where he worked at Royal University Hospital before joining the Department of Health. During this period he ably chaired the SAHO Employee Benefits Committee for twenty years. While serving as a senior administrator at the hospital he took evening classes at the College of Commerce and received his MBA at age 58. A special highlight of this course was a project in Ukraine while balancing studies and full-time work. Four days before his unexpected passing, his service to the community was acknowledged by the province with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal. Ian Sutherland died 28 March 2023 [in Saskatoon].
