Rodney Laporte was born in Moose Jaw on 24 October 1953. He received a BA and a professional diploma in Education from the University of Alberta, an MA in History from the University of Regina, and an LL.B. from the University of Saskatchewan. He worked in Moose Jaw as a high school teacher and as a partner in a law firm. He joined the New Democratic Party in 1968 and served on the federal and provincial executives of the party from 1983 to 1988.

He was elected to the House of Commons as the member for Moose Jaw - Lake Centre in the general election of 1988. He was appointed associate Agriculture Critic for the NDP and was a member of the sub-committee of the federal Justice Committee on the Recodification of the General Part of the Criminal Code. He served on the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and was named Grains and Oilseeds Critic for the NDP. During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, he raised concerns about rural post office closures and put forward a private member's bill to provide for the special needs of children with learning disabilities. He was defeated in the general election of 1993.
