Biographical history
R.D. Van Norma was an excellent photographer who used his talent to capture the day to day way of life in Pond Inlet while stationed there with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from 1949 to 1951.
Custodial history
These photographs were first given to Lt. Edward Hancox by R.D. Van Norma on their return to Toronto in 1951. Lt. Hancox had also been stationed in Pond Inlet and the two men had become friends. The collection was then willed to Lynn (Hancox) Wilkins and her sister Beverly in the early 1990's. It was their wish that the photographs come back to the people of Pond Inlet and they were donated to the Rebecca P. Idlout Library. The photographs were subsequently transferred to the Pond Inlet Archives on its establishment in 2005.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of 43 (forty three) b&w prints taken by R.D. Van Norma mainly in the Pond Inlet area. The images include interesting scenes of hand mining coal from open face rock along the Salmon River. There are also scenes of Christmas dinners, inside the HBC store, an Anglican Church service and some portrait views of people.
