Bio/Historical Note: Dr. Charles Melville (Red) Williams was born on 18 March 1925 in Regina. The family later moved to Shamrock, Saskatchewan, where he started school. Over the years his family worked and farmed near Lethbridge, Alberta and Calgary. While living in Calgary, Dr. Williams enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in February 1942, sailing on the HMCS “Sioux.” Dr. Williams, now nicknamed Red, resumed his education, studying at the University of British Columbia and Oregon State University. In 1954, armed with his PhD, he came to the University of Saskatchewan where he began a career in Animal Husbandry/Animal Science that lasted 60 years. Dr. Williams served as professor emeritus after retirement and kept an office in the College of Agriculture until the age of 89. He received the Order of Canada in 1978 and the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2002. He retired from the U of S in 1992. In 2016 Dr. Williams was knighted for his service to France on D-Day and became a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour. Red Williams died in Saskatoon in 2018 at age 93.
