Administrative history

The Dominion Commission (officially "The Commission appointed pursuant to The United Church Act, chapter 100 of the Statutes of Canada, 1924") was formed to enable the distribution of property between the United Church of Canada, which about 70% of Presbyterian Churches in Canada joined, and the remaining "non-concurring" Presbyterian Church.

Custodial history

Records in the collection were likely transferred to the archives between 1925 and 1986. Their original provenance is unclear but the finding aid (written ca.1986) notes that the larger group of Church Union records (under A.381.IX) may have come to the archives at different times and/or from different sources, as suggested by the names noted on some documents – including E.H. Oliver, D.S. Dix, and Walter C. Murray.

Scope and content

The collection consists primarily textual materials relating to the creation of the United Church and the associated Commission Pursuant to the United Church of Canada Act. Contents include: commission proceedings; orders relating to property; and collected correspondence and other materials relating to non-concurring Presbyterian congregations in Saskatchewan.

Arrangement

Original order for many of these records is unclear. Items listed under A.381.IX were arranged sometime before 1990 and described as part of the Church Union collection in 2016. In 2023, select groups of records were re-described as fonds (see Related Materials).
