Typed copy of "A Diary of Reverend Arthur Whiteside, 1850-1926" (108 pages), as presented to Wesley Church by W. Carleton Whiteside, M.D., in 1954. Rev. Whiteside was a Methodist clergyman who, in 1880, went by river boat from Edmonton to Prince Albert, where he established the Wesley Church and worked for three years as a missionary.

This collection consists primarily of correspondence, notes, clippings and photographs. It includes material of other Porter family members.

This collection relates to the writing and research of Honoré Jaxon: Prairie Visionary. This book completes Donald Smith’s “Prairie Imposters” popular history trilogy concerning three prominent figures who all pretended an Aboriginal ancestry they did not, in fact, possess – Honoré Jaxon, Grey Owl, and Long Lance. The material includes photocopies of material from various sources including other archives. Unless indicated titles were supplied by author/donor.
William Henry Jackson, also known as Honoré Joseph Jaxon, Louis Riel’s secretary in
1884/85 immediately before the North-West Rebellion, labour leader (b in Toronto 13
May 1861; d in New York C, NY 10 Jan 1952). After his family moved from Ontario to Prince Albert, Sask, Will Jackson joined them, abandoning his Classics course at the University of Toronto. Having completed 3 years there, he was one of the best-educated men in the area. He became secretary of the local farmers' union, and in this capacity he met Riel in the summer of 1884. Sympathetic to the Métis cause, he went to live at Batoche, Sask, to serve as Riel's secretary, converted to Roman Catholicism and later accepted Riel's new religion. After the failure of the rebellion, or “resistance,” Jackson was tried and committed to the lunatic asylum at Fort Garry, Man. Escaping 2 months later, he walked to the American border and eventually settled in Chicago, Ill. As Honoré Joseph Jaxon he worked as a union organizer for over 2 decades. "Riel's Secretary" moved to New York after WWI, where he died (Canadian Encyclopedia Online).

This fonds contains original manuscripts, copies, and photographs, created and collected by A.S. Morton as University Librarian. The records focus on the history of western Canada, especially Saskatchewan. It includes material on the fur trade and exploration, white settlement and interaction with native people, and the Riel Rebellions. Originals of the copied material date from 1623.

The fonds consists of textual materials generated by the Presbytery, its secretaries, committees and related bodies, in fulfillment of their responsibilities, as outlined in the Manual of the United Church of Canada.

Contents include: minutes; correspondence; newsletters; statistics (1960); records of the Communications Committee (1969-1980); a document “Sketch History of Rosetown Presbytery, Part 1” (Oct. 1975), by Rev. M. John Moor; and some minutes, correspondence, and other material from the United Church Men / A.O.T.S.

Contents include: minutes (1926-1949); a treasurer’s book; and a “Report of the Historical Committee of the Elrose Presbytery” (Feb. 9, 1932), which includes a history of the presbytery and its pastoral charges.

This collection contains material obtained by the Committee on Historical Records, established at the University in the early 1940's to obtain historical documents and reminiscences from individuals throughout the province. Although many responses are brief and contain only suggested names of people to be contacted, some replies provide detailed accounts of early settlement and community development. The fonds also contains brief family histories from a class in 1943.

Manuscripts -- "Historical notes of Kamsack Presbytery", histories of the Pastoral Charges in the Presbytery; and "Historical Sketch of various pastoral charges in Kamsack Presbytery", which is a typed version of the manuscript histories but not an exact copy. The histories cover the period up to the late 1920's and early 1940's.

History -- includes correspondence (dated 1935, 1936), completed historical questionnaires, handwritten and typed histories.

This fonds contains correspondence, including that between Dr. and Mrs. Oliver while he was serving overseas as a chaplain during World War I; his diary from travels in Europe between 1908-9; his sermons and prayers, articles, addresses; as well as newspaper clippings concerning: the war, Oliver's position as Moderator of the United Church, book reviews, and obituaries. In addition, there are several manuscripts, including the "Minutes of Council of Assiniboia," "The History of the North West Territories," "James Anderson Fonds," "Roman Economic Conditions to the Close of the Empire," and "The Canadian North West: Its Early Development and Legislative Records;" as well as offprints from the transactions of the Royal Society. The fonds also contains some photographs, miscellaneous souvenirs, and Dr. Oliver's diplomas.

History file -- "Report of the Historical Committee of the Elrose Presbytery," Feb. 9 , 1932, outlining history of the Presbytery and its Charges. There is also a covering letter from Rev. R.B. Beavis concerning the Presbytery. The "History of Elrose Presbytery" is more detailed history and has an index.
