College of Arts and Science - Awards

Art Knight, dean of Arts, presents the University Prize in Arts to Lynn Elizabeth McLeod of Saskatoon during Convocation held at Centennial Auditorium.

Bio/Historical Note: "Some troubling questions have been raised over the awarding of the prestigious President's Medal at the University of Saskatchewan. Each year the award is given to the top undergraduate at Fall convocation. the university's awards bulletin states that the medal is given to the most distinguished undergranduate of the year taking into consideration both scholarship and leadership...This year's award was given to Cyprian Enweani who represented Canada at the last Olympics [1988] and is active in local anti-drug campaigns. Enweani graduated with a grade point average 12 points higher. Subcommittee chair, Professor Ivo Lambi, resigned his position as chair because he felt that the award was given without proper consideration of academic achievement. Others on campus feel there are other reasons for McLeod not being awarded the medal. McLeod listed on her application her involvement in the gay and lesian community and some feel that involvement was what denied her the medal. Peter Millard, head of the English Department, is one of those who believes McLeod's involvement in the gay/lesbian community was a factor for her not being awarded the medal. According to Millard, the subcommittee simply selected the wrong person. The controversy has caused the Academic Awards Committee to make some changes in the way decisions are made in the awarding of future President's Medals. University Council directed the subcommittee to clarify its criteria for awarding the medal and to review its operation procedures". -Perceptions, v8 i3, 11 April 1990, pps 14-15.
